## Life admin has a shape. Here's what's actually in it.

A 2019 study of 70 people across 35 couples gave this work a name most people have felt but never had a word for. That name is “cognitive labor”. It breaks into three parts, and none of them look like "doing a chore."

Noticing the passport is six weeks from expiring, before it turns into a scramble at the post office.

### Deciding

Comparing dentists, weighing one insurance policy against another, picking which school to actually visit.

### Monitoring

Checking whether the refund ever landed, whether the form actually went through, whether anyone replied.

Almost none of it arrives as a chore on a list. It arrives as a message: a renewal notice, an appointment confirmation, a school thread, a bill, or a refund email. A UK government time-use survey put unpaid work at 3h 37m (women) vs 2h 43m (men) a day. That's housework, caring for others, and volunteering, in a one-week diary study, self-reported and UK-only. It's the clearest official evidence that this work exists and that it isn't split evenly. But it measures housework and caregiving in general, not the specific renewals-and-refunds admin this page is about.

The closest research to that narrower question is the study behind the taxonomy above. It measures who carries it: who carries the load and how it's shared, not how many hours it takes. So we're not going to back into an "hours of life admin a week" figure just to have a number on this page. That's why you won't find one here, on purpose.
