Personal

Three tones for ending a subscription and getting it in writing.

When to use this

A subscription is still charging you for something you stopped using months ago, and the cancel button is buried three menus deep or missing entirely. The trap is calling and getting talked into a discount instead of the cancellation you actually asked for.

Three variants

## Same situation, three different stances.

```
Hi [Company name],
Please cancel my subscription on the account under [account email or number], effective at the end of the current billing period. Please confirm the cancellation in writing and that no further charges will go through after that date.
Thanks,
Hi [Company name],
I've had a good run with the service, but I'd like to cancel my subscription under [account email or number] as of the end of this billing period. No specific complaint, it's just not something I'm using enough to justify anymore. Could you confirm the cancellation and that no more charges will follow?
Thanks for having me as a customer,
[Your name]
```

```
Hi [Company name],
This is a formal request to cancel my subscription under [account email or number], effective immediately. I do not authorise any further charges to my account past today's date. Please send written confirmation that the cancellation has gone through and the account is closed.
```

Why this works

- States the account identifier up front, so there's nothing to search for on their side.

- Asks for written confirmation, which is the part that actually stops a surprise charge next month.

- Skips the reason entirely in the short version, since a cancellation doesn't need one to be valid.

- The firm version states there's no authorisation for further charges, in writing, which matters if one slips through anyway.

Before you send

## What to change.

**[Company name]**

The company or service you're cancelling.

**[account email or number]**

Whatever identifies your account: the email on file, or an account number.

**[Your name]**

Sign with your own name.

Questions

## Fair questions, straight answers.

**What if they try to offer me a discount to stay?**

Decide before you reply whether a discount would actually change your mind. If it wouldn't, the firm version's line about no further charges keeps the conversation from turning into a retention pitch.

**Do I need to give a reason?**

No. 'Please cancel' is a complete request on its own. A reason is only useful if you want to give one, or if a specific problem is worth mentioning.
