How to chase a repair that's overdue

Three tones for getting a real answer on something that's overdue.

When to use this

Something was supposed to be fixed or delivered by a certain date, and that date has come and gone with no update. The trap is calling repeatedly and getting a different answer each time, with nothing in writing to point back to.

Three variants

Same situation, three different stances.

Hi [Company name],

Checking in on [item], reference [reference number]. It was due back on [date promised] and I haven't heard anything since. Could you give me a real update, and a new date if the original one's no longer accurate?

Thanks,

Hi [Company name],

Hope the delay is a sign you're just backed up rather than anything worse. [item], reference [reference number], was due on [date promised] and I haven't had an update since. No rush on an apology, just let me know honestly where things stand and roughly when I can expect it back.

Thanks,

Firm
Hi [Company name],

[item], reference [reference number], was promised back on [date promised], and that date has now passed without an update. I need a firm date this week, in writing, or I'll need to look at other options for getting this resolved.

Why this works

  • Repeats the reference number every time, so a new person picking up the case has what they need immediately.
  • Asks for a date in writing, which is worth more than a verbal promise on the phone.
  • States a real consequence in the firm version, instead of an empty threat with nothing behind it.

Before you send

What to change.

[Company name]

[item]

[reference number]
Your job, ticket or order reference.
[date promised]
The date you were originally told.

Questions

Fair questions, straight answers.

What counts as 'other options' in the firm version?

Whatever's genuinely true for you: a different provider, a refund request, or a formal complaint. Only name one you'd actually follow through on.

Should I call instead of emailing?

A call is fine for a quick check, but ask for the update in writing afterward. A phone promise with nothing to point back to is exactly what a repair like this tends to lose.
